MELA was formed in November 2010 to provide an umbrella body for a number of learning communities that were threatened by budget cuts and a loss of funding.
It is supported by Lifeworlds Learning, a community interest company established to inspire and support learning communities.
The term MELA (see box right) was chosen as it represented both what we were trying to achieve, and the origins of its founding members.
